SYDNEY, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A whale has been freed from a tangle of ropes and flotation buoys in Sydney Harbor on Tuesday.

The Humpback was part of a pod migrating north along Australia's eastern coastline, when it became entangled in the debris.

About 100 meters of rope and buoys had caught the animal when fishermen spotted it just south of Sydney in the afternoon.

With authorities alerted, the New South Wales State National Parks and Marine Rescue Service approached the animal in small dinghies and attached a number of larger buoys to slow the whale down.

With the creature subdued, rescuers worked to untangle the whale.

After more than one hour, it eventually made its way free and will soon rejoin its pod as it continues the long migration north.

Every year during the southern winter, whales travel from the waters around Antarctica to warmer climates, as far north as Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
